3:09 pm - i'll pull you in
|
in honor of the new CD player in the darkroom, i am updating today. another zone assignment, pulling film. for this one i took two rolls of film, of the same thing, in the same (bright) light. one roll was exposed according to my camera's meter and developed for the normal time. this is the N roll. the other roll was overexposed by one stop and underdeveloped by 20%, this is the N-1 roll. I printed both pictures at the same aperature, with the same filter. supposedly, this is a technique we're supposed to use on days with harsh, bright light. the N-1 roll is supposed to be more normal-looking, and the N roll is supposed to look washed out. thanks to my scanner, both prints look washed out...
N

N-1

because of the nature of the assignment.. i didn't mess with the pictures in photoshop. actually i did, but not for enhancement, for making them look more like the original prints. it kind of worked. i kind of messed up the N-1 egg. i hate photoshop. and scanning. i didn't bother fixing the washed out edges, but i'd like it to be known that i would not turn in prints that look like what i post here. god dammit. personally, i see that the N-1 print is better overall, but i like parts of the N print more (the wrinkles next to the fork).

sooo... this is one of the trial prints for the last print i turned in. when i scanned it, it suddenly became really fake-looking, so i darkened it with photoshop to make it look more like the actual print. it lost A LOT of detail, i dont know why. most of the shit i do on photoshop is just to undo the damage from scanning. it kind of sucks. the print i turned in was spotted perfectly (WHO, who can spot better in real life than with photoshop? ME.) this was my first time doing long exposures to create a blurry image. i guess i had never done it before because i see it as the "easy way out" because anything pretty much looks "cool" when it's blurred. i like how this turned out, mostly because of the hint of symmetry. this assignment was "pushing" film. it basically means that i underexposed the roll by two stops and then developed it for time and a half (maybe i'll post the "pulling" prints later on). fuck i just realized i forgot to resize these. and, i thought it was obvious, but, yes, this is me. i've been doing a lot of self portraits lately, mostly because i lack a better subject.

( meh, the 'original' that doesnt look at all like the real-life print )

Not particularly great photography and not edited at all. Just a pretty scene from the cabin we stayed at in Dodge Ridge 2005. Fun times.

10:41 pm - my, what big feet you have
|

this is another assignment ("white on white") from last year. it was my teacher's favorite of my prints, and i kind of like it. this is mishmish sitting on my window sill at the old house. he used to spend hours there looking down at the street, it was pretty cute. i think i put a lamp on him to take this picture. i don't know how these things work, but i noticed that this became a lot noisier when i scanned it. it kind of bothers me. in 'person' it's a lot smoother. either way i've come to the conclusion that i need to stop using 400 speed film. i photoshopped this a little (despeckled, made it darker, and burned the lower left corner) and i'm actually not sure if i like it more than the original. oh, i remember this being the first thing i printed that i felt communicated something ("hairy") and that's what i was proud of.

7:40 pm - beginner's luck
|
this is from my second roll of film last year. i printed some stupid picture off of that roll to turn in, and months later i realized i actually had some cool negatives on that roll. however... the negative isn't that cool, there's a huge out-of-focus flower on the right side that i have to crop out, which is why the composition is strange. i think this was back when i was taking stuff at 1/15 in the evening without a tripod, so it's actually pretty focused all things considered. anyways... i've been stuggling with this one for a year or so (and have printed it way too many times) because there are some major flaws in it, but i really like certain parts and am unwilling to let go (ha, reminicient of my love life). this had a shitload of dust (from scanner, not print) that i photoshopped and i did increase the contrast (even though in the other prints it really doesn't need it. i had to use this print which was originally darker because it included more of the picture).

9:36 pm - slightly sloppy
|

I changed the color of the sky to make it look prettier, and altered the trees a little bit. Trees along the hilltop were pretty hard to select around so there are some rough spots, but I think it looks nice, if not entirely realistic.

8:23 pm - what a cutie

finally something i printed myself. this was the first assignment i turned in this year. it was one of those, "wait i have to turn something in? lemme go halfass something, i'll be right back." but strangely, when i got it back today, i kind of liked it. i mostly just like mishmish's expression and position. i also like the leaves in the back (but i wish they were more glossy or something). i also don't hate the composition. i was forced to put him up in the corner of the image because in the negative there was a hose right by his head. also, it's nice to have a picture of mishmish looking innocent and clean; he's been getting into a lot of fights lately and looks pretty scruffy. this didn't need photoshop either (other than despeckle). even though i was tempted to up the contrast... just a tiny bit. but i didnt.

9:42 pm - typical photoshop creation

neato:

The picture of Jack Johnson I took at his concert last year at the Greek Theatre. The rest are all album covers and such, with some neat lighting effects.

8:12 pm - I'd rather be in...

because keenie's a slacker, i'm updating twice in a row. another greece picture from this summer. that sign was hell, because photoshop dodging/burning is the bane of my existence. i dont think that photoshopping it even made it that much better. i cropped it and messed with color saturation (first time,) but it looks a lot like the original (which i unfortunately didn't save, so there's no honest version today.) now lemme think of a title... -talya
